Story: I had this shot in mind for a long time but it actually turned out to be more difficult than I imagined. It took me a while before I could spend the time I needed to shoot it. It's not that it was all that technically difficult to shoot, it was just one of those times when what I imagined ahead of time had to be worked through a bit. All along I knew I wanted the hard shadow and I wanted the light to come from overhead. The problem was the angle I envisioned left the shadow hidden under the razor. I tried all kinds of different angles for the shadow but nothing felt right. It wasn't till I changed the position of the camera and the razor from horizontal to vertical that I figured out where the shadow would work best. Of course the change in position made no difference in the end result but something about changing it up got me thinking differently. Sometimes you just have to keep trying things.
Lighting: This is a composite shot so there are two light setups but they are both pretty close. The light for the shadow is a single dynalite 2040 head with no modifier. It's on-axis with the camera and pointing down at the razor. Then the light for the razor is a 4040 head in a beauty dish in essentially the same place.
