“Seaward ho! Hang the treasure! It's the glory of the sea that has turned my head.” ― Robert Louis Stevenson, Treasure Island
I really wanted to quote the movie franchise "Pirates of the Caribbean" today, but I don't think I can. Really, most of the fantasies we have about pirates can be traced back to Treasure Island. It's a classic work, complete with swashbuckling, treasure hunting and high seas to be sailed upon.
That said, it doesn't seem right to do a pirate piece without nodding to the original source for most pirate fancies -- not that the real, historical pirates weren't awesome enough, mind you.
This piece came together quite well for two reasons. The first is that awesome book I'm reading, called "The Pirate Primer". It's a real book -- No Photoshopping! -- which functions as a dictionary for pirate slang. Where possible, it cites the source material, which is why I bought it. It's a fun read.
Second is the awesome map texture I came across the other day. Most of my textures are pretty basic, but when I found this one, I knew I had to utilize it for something. You can find it here!
