mikenyman has added a photo to the pool:
I remember reading a strobist 'on assignment' where he fired a flash several times during a long exposure to give interesting lighting to a shoe (he was practising the technique for a food shoot). This technique stuck with me, and I finally tried it, on my own shoes. I do have a bit of vignetting applied in post, but that doesn't change the effect achieved with just the flash (it was to remove the trail from the LEDs on the back of the flash). I really liked this technique, and I'll try it again when I have more time (this was taken at 5 to midnight).
Strobist: 6 second exposure, YN-460ii on 1/64th power, with piece of dark construction paper wrapped around as a snoot. Fired manually 5 times: above and directly at right foot; same shot for left foot; one in between to light up the floor (pulled away a bit for added spread); one in close to light up the inside of the right foot shoe; same for the left.
