One thing that chess always taught me was the law of sacrifice. On the game board, you can move your pieces anywhere. But by moving them to point place, they can't be in other places. It's a choice, but it's also a sacrifice.

I really wish more people were realistic about that life expectation. "You can do anything you want!" is a phrase I heard from well-meaning teachers, parents and mentors when I was growing up.

And it's true: You can do almost anything you want, but you can't do everything you want.

Choices are sacrifices.

How we maneuver as a result of those choices and the resources at hand -- that's tactics.
