Entrances to the cave at Malia, Crete, April 2012

Nikos commences his exit while Ifiyenia looks on.

Shot with the Nikon D3100 with the 18-55 kit lens trying to make use of and to balance three sources of lighting, available light (from the entrance, on Ifiyenia in the window), headtorches (on the foreground) and a flashgun (on the blue caver at left). The flashgun is not adjustable, so we had to base everything around the fact that f/5.6 at 200 ISO was going to be the two non-variables. Available light then had to be fixed, and we shot each shot at 6 secs (perhaps a little too much, as I would prefer Ifiyenia not to be so bright up in the centre of the image). The foreground was lightpainted with a Scurion head torch - I like the texture on the left, the right needed more work, but we had limited time working as a team. There is also one flash from behind the columns at right, pointing to Nikos. I had to shield the rocks immediately behind it with my hand, otherwise they would burn.

Generally I am pleased with this first attempt at combining three sources of light.

I was in the cave as part of a photography course organised by the SPOK Caving Club of Crete with Robbie Shone, who helped in the light-painting and execution.
