Connected

A mechanism from a robot at the Mid-Atlantic Robotics FIRST competition in Lenape NJ.

Strobist:
Zone A: SB900 Camera Left above and behind subject on Stand with LumiQuist LTP softbox
Zone B: SB900 Camera Right below and in the machine to the side of the mechanism with standard diffuser.

Triggered by MiniTT1 w/ AC3 on camera FlexTT5 for each strobe in two zones both TTL.
Zone A ~-0.7 FEC
Zone B -2 FEC

Camera in A mode at shutter TTL floor of 1/60, which was about 1 stop under for the ambient.

The camera was wedged in through other robot parts to get the shot. So composition is the best I could do given the constraints.

Basic RAW processing:
Sharpening
Noise reduction
Lens profile
simple tone curve adjustments

All of this gear performed very well. I shot nearly 450 shots and had great versatility to move quickly thanks to the PocketWizard Flex gear and especially the AC3 zone controller.

The LumiQuist LTP is quickly becoming a go to flash modifier. In this environment I have to move fast and work around many other people in the constantly moving and busy pits. The LTP on a portable stand is about as big as I can get away with admits the crowded booths and press of people. Not too big but gives a very nice light that is easy to work with. Plus the efficiency is really quite good. But I was shooting ISO 1600.

Having the other flash mobile, small and wireless was invaluable for getting light into robots where light just doesn't shine.

Moving quickly with constantly varying distances TTL was really the only choice. I just had to move the flash and shoot. There were some variations in FEC depending on the subject's color and reflective character. But overall it was really good and the AC3 made it a breeze to trun the zones off and on as I moved around the machines. Sometimes it just wasn't possible to move the light stand. No time and no room.
