I'm not really a fan of processing images to the hilt using PS, but atleast it's good fun and educational to lose yourself in the system. The base image was really a balancing act between the flash and the ambient as the subject was shot against the harsh afternoon sunlight. I used max sync speed (on my D90 + triggers I can get to 1/200) to kill as much ambient and expose for the sky; once I had this as my base exposure, I simply set the flash (bare, no gel) to the desired power output (1/4) but zoomed in to illuminate the subject's right. Post processing with multiply blend mode to bring out the darker parts of the image (such as the eyes), some burn/dodge and de-sat for that grungy, yet vivid look.
