Flying Colours

Flying Colours

The Australian Red Ensign is flown by ships and boats, as opposed to the blue ensign. You'll see this flag a lot on vehicles of the sea. On a recent trip to you-know-where, this flag fluttered in all its glory on the boat, against the fantastic backdrop of the harbour bridge so I thought here was a shot, a story telling shot to be definitely had here. Without strobes, I'd have lost a lot of detail (blown out highlights, shadows lost the sky, etc) in the extremely harsh sunlight. I used 2 strobes held together and set to 1/2 power each as that seemed to overpower the sun and still get through the small aperture (f22) I had chosen. The 2 strobes held together guaranteed more 'volume' of light rather than brightness, so I could cover as much of the flag surface as possible from a close distance. No gel, full daylight balanced. Max sync speed at 1/200 + aperture f22 ensured I could cut out as much ambient as possible, yet recovering the sky and keeping the harbour bridge sharp.
