206/365 - Glass and Light

206/365 - Glass and Light

Another experiment with lighting tonight. This is a piece of decorative glass from my wife's “collection o’ purple glass things”, a reproduction “quilted glass” dish with a matching lid. I thought it would be interesting to light it as if it was lit from within, and that started me down the path that led to this shot.

I used a Pyrex baking dish as a base, with one SB-700 under it (full power, 120mm zoom), firing through a piece of black construction paper with a hole cut through it. A piece of clear plastic covers the paper, with some other small pieces placed to block light leaks. The backlight is my other SB-700 at 1/10 power, gelled red, with the built-in diffuser, fired from below up against a piece of black foam core board. The "horizon" is there because the reflective plastic doesn't extend all the way to the background. I liked the look, but it was also problematic to block light spill from the strobe underneath without doing that (and without cutting a hole in the plastic as well.)

Pretty much straight out of camera.

Nikon D7000 w/Nikkor 18-200mm @ 95mm, 1/250s @ ƒ/8, ISO200. Strobes as described above.
