In June I traveled back to my hometown of Carlsbad. During that short jaunt I got the opportunity to take some 'environmental' portraits of my old friend & phenomenal musician, Robin Earwood of the 'Robin Scott Trio'.

We pieced the whole thing together rather quickly and shot in a small variety of locations. This particular shot comes from the last of the spots we were going to hit (on a hill in the desert), and we made it there too late for the magic lighting I was hoping for. To pull in as much light as possible from what little was left I had to crank up the ISO and expose for ambient at 4000 (thank you 5DmkII) and then start to work in the speedlights.

Robin is such a natural with what he does, and so damn talented, I would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit nervous during this whole shoot. I want my photographs to be on par and deserving of the level of quality and skill of his work.
