Erica had an idea for the clothes. Then what to do with the outfit? It was raining so we couldn't go into an alley, so instead, we went out into the Livestock Exchange Building hallway, hung a white sheet and did a shot on the floor.

Strobist Info: SB900 gridded on a lightstand, camera left, triggered by PocketWizard Flex TT5s. The rest of the light was ambient through some windows behind the camera. Light falloff made the sheet darker.

I've been contributing to Strobist Sundays since my daughter was three. She's growing up mighty fast.

Aside from the crop, this was straight out of the camera. Lighting was a softbox to camera right for key metered two stops over a small shoot-through umbrella to camera left for fill.

Some fun in the studio this weekend. I worked with studio partner Steve Brokaw on this, the idea for the shoot was his, I stepped in as the lighting guy.

Steve's idea was to use blue-gelled lights on the backdrop, but when I saw the makeup come together I really wanted high-key with a large main light.

This is two Elinchrom D-Lites on a white backdrop with a Ranger RX into a 7' Westcott Octabank.

DR's Room

My buddy Greg and I were supposed to get together one night for a colaborative model shoot. Our model couldn't make it but that didn't stop us from playing with lights in the dark. We decided to just light up what we could find.

This was taken with my super compact and mobile street strobist setup: a Fuji X100, two flashes, compact stands, and whatever modifiers I can fit in a small messenger bag.

Processing info:
- Raw conversion, a bit of burning, and some vignette in Lightroom.
- Nik HDR Efex used to create an HDR image from single raw file, which was blended with the original in with Photoshop.
- Topaz Labs Adjust - Gritty preset blended in with Photoshop.

Got a new monolight with a battery pack. So my friend Eric said he was going to help me to learn how to use it. Went to a park and he said to help me out he was going to give me the worst lighting senario possible. We were in a gazeebo at sunset and he had a hat with glasses. Needless to say it was not easy. So how did I do?

Ambrose Vari ND

Ambrose Vari ND

Ambrose and I came to an amicable agreement to his strike demands and he was in the mood for a little camera time. It was beautiful, warm, bright sunny day outside without a cloud in the sky. Ambrose wanted to work on his tan and I wanted to test my new Singh-Ray Vari ND filter as well as practice shooting with the strobe in bright sunlight so we headed outside. This is what I would refer to as a "Win Win" situation as we were both getting something out of this activity.

With this filter it will provide the ability to shoot at f/2.8 using strobe lights in bright sunlight by allowing for reducing ambient light anywhere from 2 to 8 stops. The first shot on the left was shot at f/2.8, ND Vari filter on reducing the ambient light by 2 stops and no strobe light. The shot on the right was shot at f/2.8 and with a strobe shot through a softbox and ND Vari filter reducing the ambient light by 2 stops.

I'm very happy with the results of the filter, no discoloration nor noticeable vignetting. I'll have to figure out the change in color at the top of the shirt. I believe it's due to the sunlight that was directly above when I was shooting.
